About us
ETH transfer protects intellectual property and negotiates licensing agreements for ETH technologies (license-out). The department reports to the Vice President for Knowledge Transfer and Corporate Relations.
Organizational chart
ETH strives to make optimal use of the commercial potential of its research. To this aim, ETH supports researchers in protecting their inventions, software, data, tangible research property (e.g. materials, prototypes), and know-how. The intellectual property (IP) rights can then be licensed. ETH transfer, the department for IP and licensing, has the mandate to
- educate and strategically collaborate with the ETH community to protect know-how and technology generated at ETH,
- evaluate research results of ETH with respect to IP protection and licensing potential,
- professionally protect IP and maintain a strategically relevant portfolio for licensing,
- negotiate IP licenses with external partners
- control and distribute income from IP licensing
- establish the initial contact with founders
- evaluate ventures with regard to their classification as ETH spin-off or ETH startup
- negotiate lease, license, and infrastructure agreements with founders
- manage and maintain the equity portfolio of ETH Zurich.
